Since the end of the 1960s, the diffusion of contraceptives and the legalization of abortion have improved birth control. This article analyzes from a quantitative point of view the preliminary conditions set by parents before having their first child, in particular those regarding the fertility intentions as they are expressed. On the basis of the longitudinal survey Étude des relations familiales et intergénérationnelles (Érfi, Ined-Insee), conducted between 2005 and 2011 and bearing upon 10,000 individuals, we first analyze the variations of the fertility intentions using different criteria, in particular the economic, matrimonial and demographic status of individuals. Then, using the longitudinal data of the study, we compare the intentions expressed in 2005 with their realization three and six years later. We thus identify the situations most propitious to the implementation of the parental project.
