This article analyzes family socialization through domestic work in the course of childhood and adolescence. It builds upon retrospective reminiscences collected from young individuals coming out of numerous families (four children and over) and from their parents. It shows how these younger individuals were solicited or not for domestic tasks and for caring for their younger siblings when they were still children. It sheds light on the social logic that determines whether this solicitation take place or not. In the vast majority of families, the participation of children to these tasks is gendered and unequal, and girls are much more often solicited than their brothers. Yet, the solicitation of children varies with the social standing of families, the economic and cultural resources attached to this status, and the conceptions of childhood that predominate.
