Young people without qualifications are often studied with regard to their deficiencies in relation to supposedly normal professional integration. Yet by exploring the diversity of their practices, and the narratives that they themselves produce over the course of their trajectories, we observe that they develop strategies that navigate the full range of economic spheres beyond the simple world of work. Their financial integration and their investment in spheres outside the professional world are just as important in determining the role of work in their everyday lives and the ways in which they look to the future. This article focuses on the consequences of extending young people’s activities into the economic worlds beyond the sphere of production, which is characterised by uncertainty. Their moral attitude towards work must be reconceptualised in light of these changes.
