Between 1890 and 1920, several books on “sociologie catholique” were published in France. In the first part of this essay, we measured this surge in publications, related to sociology, socialism or social Catholicism. In the second part, we study the context, authors and subjects of these publications, showing that most have closer ties to Christian social economy than to academic sociology. We finally focus on the criticism of academic sociology in the works of “sociologie catholique.”
