A preventive medicine enabling the appropriate early treatment of children suffering some physical or psychic disorder is something quite different to a medicine that ventures into the realms of prediction, paradoxically consigning children to a fate that, in most cases, would have been different had they not been screened. There is a risk of a self-fulfilling prophecy here—that is, of bringing about precisely what is predicted just by predicting it.
