This chapter examines the evolution of ethnographic approaches to studying gangs. It divides the history of the study of gangs with ethnographic methods into four distinct eras: Classic, Interstitial, Contemporary, and the “Rodgers Revolution”. The most recent era, the “Rodgers Revolution” focuses primarily on Latin America, and is inspired by the work of Dennis Rodgers and his students. This work provides considerable details regarding the cultural, historical and political influences that produced gangs in the region. The chapter also highlights different ethnographic approaches in the study of gangs and their role in contemporary society.
