The authors focus on the situation of single fathers raising their child(-ren) on their own, their findings being based on the study of the clinical aspects of Child Welfare Units. An attempt is made to understand how fathers’ parental skills are evaluated, whereas professional experience and institutional practices are mainly based, when focusing on mono-parental situations, on how single mothers are provided with support. The theoretical framework is analysed from the same perspective. The fathers’ imaginary world is also considered in connection with motherly and family images. Finally, some suggestions are made with respect to professional practices and possible paths for further reflection in matters of research and action.
