CAIRN-INT.INFO : International Edition

In Argentina, a country where feminism has been experiencing a historic boom since the mid-2010's, and where soccer is an essential part of the national identity, women’s soccer was made professional in March 2019. The campaign in sports led by player Macarena Sánchez became part of a feminist discourse -an unprecedented convergence in this Latin American country- and the gender inequalities in the world of soccer could therefore be understood structurally. On both a practical and theoretical level, feminism subsumed a sphere traditionally reserved for men: using which prism can such a domain be interrogated? How can feminism contribute to its deconstruction? How can elite sports help feminism rethink social and gender relations?
