The 1930s are often referenced whenever concerns are voiced about the resurgence of fascism and anti-Semitism through the rise of nationalism in Europe. Delving into the press of 1938 allows us to better understand this moment in time when political discourse and events entered a radical phase. It is this subject matter that the philosopher Michaël Fœssel has focused on in his latest work, being keen to understand how a democracy can self-destruct through weariness, by adopting the authoritarian language of the adversaries that it is supposed to fight against, and above all by wrongly identifying an enemy.
