In this article we implement a methodology which we term a “rhetoric of reception,” to explore the existing field of tensions between expectations and representations relating to the digital book. We first discuss available empirical data on representations of the e-book among readers and publishers. We then analyze two fictional narratives “enhanced” with hyperlinks. We show that the on-screen features of the digital reading device shape and anticipate potential practices by blending the heritage of print culture with the specificities of the digital medium.
