The aim of this article is to explore the influence of the e-book on the everyday life of district libraries and local public libraries near the city of Grenoble in the French Isère department. Our study is based on the results of a qualitative and quantitative study of librarians and library users. Firstly, we show that district libraries offer a paradoxical approach to electronic books, in an attempt to reconcile locally based service and globalization. We then focus on the ways in which local library sociabilities both hinder and foster the development of e-book collections and digital practices.
