This qualitative survey among young former civic service volunteers shows that their participation in the scheme led their professional aspirations to either increase, reduce, or remain the same. These effects varied depending on the educational, social, and economic resources of these young people. A low level of educational attainment did not always mean that the civic service scheme was simply a nice interlude for these young people: even if they had a lower level of educational attainment, developing a positive relationship with their tutor opened up genuine, albeit slightly adjusted, future prospects.
