The subject of this article is the televised debate that took place between the two rounds of the 2017 presidential election in France. Through this case study we will analyze the processes by which socially and politically diverse audiences receive and interpret political information. The article relies on extensive observations carried out simultaneously during the debate among seven diverse groups. The analysis reveals the social processes involved in the ordering of the received information on two structured scales: firstly, that of the interactions within the groups that tend to produce homogeneity and to neutralize discord; secondly, that of the social space of the audiences, including their alternative readings of the debate, and their (non-) alignment with the interpretation which emerged in the subsequent public debate. The comparison of these results shows how social order is refracted in the order of political receptions.
