Few institutions will accept them and even fewer will meet the requirements to handle their special needs. Whereas elderly people with psychiatric disorders still face discrimination within society, the lack of devoted institutions and trained healthcare professionals will imply more ambulatory care. However, innovative home care services are needed to sustain this kind of care management. Some healthcare professionals may consider the quality of life experienced by elderly people with psychiatric disorders as secondary, but it is essential. It stands as predictive about these people’s changes in health and how it can be restored or maintained. Advanced practice nursing can improve quality of care. By identifying health needs and situations of discrimination and impairment of quality of life, advanced practice nurses adapt their intervention in terms of prevention, maintaining autonomy, and coordination. In France, legal decrees regarding advanced practice nursing must be extended to psychiatry and mental health. Implementations abroad may help consider the contributions of these professionals.
