Although the contributions of retired volunteers play an important role in the social organization of Switzerland, they receive little social recognition. This situation raises questions about the part that volunteer involvement can play in social inclusion during retirement, as the inclusive effects of volunteer involvement depend on the social recognition that volunteers receive. This article uses data from a qualitative research study on volunteering among retirees in Switzerland to examine the role that volunteering plays in the social inclusion of retirees and the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on this relationship.
