In the public services, there are more and more instructions to ensure that trans’ users are received appropriately. But what does this mean in concrete terms for the people concerned? This article presents a statistical analysis of their declarations of administrative discrimination, as well as a qualitative study of their experiences and strategies in the face of such episodes. Young people are particularly affected – quantitatively but also and above all subjectively – by discrimination. After their first experiences of discrimination, they tend to engage in a tactical learning process aimed at dealing with gender norms and categories in public services. In the course of their lives, individuals are thus led, if only strategically, to learn how to be compliant and respectable.
