The classification of art requires us to reconsider the question of the hierarchical organization of the arts and to understand the value and the limitations of documentary classification systems. This article discusses the various orientations and types of classifications from this perspective, analyzing how aesthetics and documentation have dealt with ideological and cognitive aspects of knowledge organization throughout history.
