On the basis of an analysis of languages that are taught at a thousand universities throughout the world—5 % of all universities—we observe that, both globally and on the level of different regions, English is always at the top of the list of such languages, followed closely by French and Spanish; the four Romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese) are often found in the leading group.
