As many historical sources indicate, intercomprehension is an ancestral practice to which people have always had recourse when interacting with others from neighboring territories. Although the teaching of languages, which is the corollary of a nation’s language policy, has long been hostile to multilingualism and to placing languages in contact with one another, didactic approaches that include intercomprehension have recently begun to make headway. By developing the learner’s autonomy and multilingual skills, such approaches present a number of advantages in a globalized world with its proliferation of international exchanges. Appealing to this mode of communication has many benefits for professional life and intercultural interactions.
