The construction of Europe was undertaken with the watchword “Never Again,” in the aftermath of a disastrous fratricidal war, to guarantee peace between the people of Europe. When Europe’s second totalitarian system collapsed, the voices of former pro-European dissidents were finally heard, calling not for an “enlargement” of Europe, but for a “return” to Europe, in other words for European “reunification.” This has only partially succeeded, with a European Union in which misunderstandings and misconceptions still persist. In this article, we attempt to analyze these while setting out ideas from different thinkers that could help to overcome them.
