Historically, from an environmental point of view, the BRICS have sometimes been marginalized and have sometimes been the victims of Western growth, but have now become major energy consumers as well as major polluters. Their growing importance within the global economy is increasing their influence on the construction of environmental governance. They have become driving forces behind new orientations and proposals, exerting their influence on North-South relations and acting as a counterweight to the prevailing model of growth. And they are developing a common alternative, speaking with one voice, despite having very different national circumstances. During these exchanges on two levels that are focused on at world summits, specific demands and values emerge that are debated and even sometimes adopted in the international sphere.
