This article explores the conditions that made it possible for the retired military officer Jair Bolsonaro to be elected president of Brazil. It examines “Bolsonarism,” the far right-wing ideology that gives him political clout. It includes a discussion of Bolsonaro’s communication strategy, which is based on provocation, political incorrectness, and attacking minorities.
