This article examines the war in Ukraine in terms of the project for lasting peace formulated by the Enlightenment, which was part of its view of historical progress. Universalist utopias that envision a world republic or planetary harmony have been challenged by recent history, and this article shows that their blind spot is the weight of the past and markers of national identity. These can serve as an asset or an obstacle for the construction of international alliances and the enlargement of supranational federations, of which the EU is the representative example.
