After countless studies on subsistence and demographic crises, many issues remain unresolved. The connection between these two types of crisis is still not known; the Labroussian relation between agricultural and industrial crises is an issue; the range of counter-measures concocted by those in power to overcome them has not been sufficiently explored; and the degree of spread of the phenomenon throughout Europe is yet to be investigated. These are some of the matters that this issue of Histoire & Mesure hopes to shed light on by exploring the 16th to the 19th centuries.
This journal publishes articles that go beyond divisions of discipline and chronology to focus on history and measurement. Through mutual consideration of sources and methods, contributions and limitations, and the history of our statistical tools, the journal actively contributes to the progress of historical research.
