CAIRN-INT.INFO : International Edition

The article focuses on the churches of Rhodes, in order to add new data and to clarify the dynamics between buildings and urban space: it is particularly about the relation between the forma urbis and the distribution of churches, also evaluating their typologies, by means of different sources. By locating and differentiating the urban places of worship, it is possible to identify the elements of continuity and transformation in the subdivision of the religious and built space, because of the installation of Latin Catholic elite in a Greek town. We will describe the buildings in relation to the urban fabric and the enlargement of the walls, leading us to the conclusion that places of worship were subordinated to the secular power. Finally, a quantitative analysis allows us to better define the relationship between the Greek and Latin worship in the town, and to start observing the supposed organisation in contrade and parishes, a subject that remains largely unexplored.
