The military organization must adjust to complexity. This means it must manage women, men, and sexual association between members of its personnel, thus implying both heterosexual and homosexual couples. Military culture has had to embrace behavior patterns appropriate to a mixed-sex organization. It has had to lose some macho aspects, such as certain rituals that facilitated bonding, integration, and competition. There is a lot at stake. A subtle balance needs to be found between a multitude of factors: opening up, accommodating both sexes, diversity, uniformity, and sharing common values.
