This article concerns the Internet-based fan communities of a movie called Matrix. The directors of this movie claim to have been influenced by contemporary “post-modernist” philosophers, principally by Jean Baudrillard. Several allusions to Baudrillard's theories appear in the movie. The philosophical dimension of Matrix conducted many intellectuals to propose interpretations of it. It also encouraged fans to discuss the “metaphysical” issues at stake in the movie on “online” forums. This article aims at understanding the impact of the philosophy it vehiculates on the public reception of Matrix. It also proposes a framework to analyse the circulation of ideas in the Internet-based fan communities. Two of these communities have been studied with this purpose.
