Recent progress in the neurosciences has encouraged sociologists to reexamine some of the basic issues involved in sociological investigation. It is argued here that naturalist theses should be treated with a certain amount of circumspection. In particular, the discussion concerns the level of analysis appropiate for sociological understanding. Should the individual be conceived of as the basic analytical unit or, in view of recently acquired knowledge on the workings of the mind, should analysis on an infra-individual level be preferred.
