The aim of this article is to highlight the importance of psychology in the creation of a Sociology chair at the Collège de France, according to the hypothesis that it is the association of these two disciplines that contributed to, or even allowed, the entry of sociology into the Collège de France. This convergence emerges from the discussions held by the professors of the Collège de France, in particular in the “hiring reports,” in which the arguments in favor of or against the introduction of the discipline and the candidates are explained. Durkheim’s supposedly distanced relationship with psychology does not, therefore, account for the exchanges that eventually developed between the two disciplines, at least as it can be observed at the Collège de France during the first decades of the twentieth century, which led to the formation of a “social science tradition” at the Collège, according to its actors.
