The common notion of mixedness (« mixité » is often conveyed in English by « hybridity » or « metissage ») is examined here from several angles: socio-logical, political, and linguistic, first through the propagation and circulation of the lexical couple mixed/mixedness (mixte/mixité), in an essay on social etymology revealing the sociological and linguistic tensions at play, then in a discussion of the notion used in a political discourse analysis, lastly in an attempt to present mixte as a potential grammatical gender.
