This article investigates the ways young trainees from Parisian suburban areas and their adult coaches in formation training centers, use sociolinguistic categories in discourse, and render them salient and significant in the interactional framework. Through a keen analysis of a long didactical interaction, the authors show how, in exchanges, the participants stress symbolic linguistic differences as well as ethnical and generational ones for dramatization. The process of categorization at work at specific moments, with respect both to the didactical task and to the larger context, produces simultaneous movements of convergence or distancing of the speakers relatively to others speakers and relatively to the categories thus appealed. The categories young people and youth languages are conveyed implicitly within the discourse that stages characters and their ways of speaking.
