The aim of this article is to show the economist's view of divorce and to propose a different but complementary approach to lawyers, practitioners or scholars, in order to create much needed and constructive dialogue between the two disciplines. Indeed, economic analysis has frameworks and tools that enable the study of transfers between ex-spouses (child support and spousal maintenance), with the aim of providing insight on the fairness and the effectiveness of the judges' decisions, in particular with regard to the setting of child support and spousal maintenance amounts.
