This article provides an overview of the reception of René Worms in German-language sociology between 1896 and 1933. Two main topics were discussed before and after the Great War. The question of organicism, even if fiercely criticized, did not obliterate Worms’ popularity as a founding-father of the discipline. The historical and heuristic significance of organicism had priority. In comparison, the question of the nature and the methods of sociology led to far more acute distortions that were anchored in national features of the institutionalization and myth-making of the discipline. In this respect, this article proposes a continuation of the transnationalism debate on the establishment of sociology as an international discipline.
