According to the World Health Organization, medicine works to restore health, in other words, to cure diseases, and also to contribute to well-being and happiness. The "ideal medicine" will be, first of all, that which is capable of controlling its own progress so as to avoid any excesses, and which considers patients globally within their socioeconomic environment. This medicine of the future can only be built on a renovated, multidisciplinary education, which allows students and physicians to better adapt to changing medical practice and society in a world undergoing profound change. To the utopians who dreamed of a world without diseases and hospitals, where life expectancy exceeds one hundred years, we should hope for a more united, humane, holistic, and ethical medicine that is fairer and more egalitarian regarding access to treatment for the most underprivileged, and always focused on research and progress. The ideal medicine is a distant horizon open to unknown continents.
