Mil neuf cent seeks to explore intellectual history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Indeed, this particular period of time appears as a threshold between two worlds, be it on a political, scientific, artistic, or literary level. Politicians learnt that they had to account for their actions; scientists became more and more specialized in their respective fields, while art and literature started to reach the masses.
With this idea in sight, the issues of this journal were designed according to major themes such as Conservative Thinking, Catholic Intellectuals, Jurists, Revolutionary Unionism, Radical Reformism, Crowd Psychology, Righteous War, and Colonial Thought. Focus is laid on the specific ways through which ideas circulated in those years – in journals, during symposiums, in letters, through inquiries and controversies. Numerous issues of Mil neuf cent – on intellectual controversies during the Dreyfus affair, on the contemporary offspring of Proudhon’s thought, on major figures from the intellectual world such as Péguy or Halévy – serve as a reminder that the original title of this journal, upon its first publication in 1983, was Cahiers Georges Sorel. In spite of a name change, which occurred in 1989, the journal remains a privileged forum for the study of Georges Sorel’s works by renewing the literature –and bibliography- on his intellectual legacy.
