The fight against malaria today falls within a biomedical understanding of the illness that moves away from the holistic conception of health established at Alma-Ata in 1978. The use of community health workers and rapid diagnostic tests illustrates this phenomenon. International institutions should consider malaria as the expression of social, economic, and environmental vulnerability, rather than a parasitic infection that has to be eliminated from the body.
