General presentation of the journal Multitudes

Multitudes is a political and cultural, theoretical and activist journal, which deals with current problems as concretely and generally as possible. Crossing societies diagonally, the magazine tries, as Michel Foucault or Félix Guattari recommended, to "take politics from its reverse", since it is in reverse practices that the subversive charge of social movements resides. These movements are not satisfied to flee, or to resist a more powerful power. They build spaces of positive affirmation, they pave the way for future scenarios. Multitudes records and debates their proposals.

Absolute domination has never existed, and still does not. Everywhere ideas, gestures, words, groups and minorities are invented, escaping from mortifying mythologies. To speak, to write, to relay words, music, images, is to work in and for the commons. The liveness of the commons has brought us together for twenty years, with more than eighty issues already published.

As a transcultural magazine, Multitudes aspires to survey and enhance the signs of the nomadic cultures emerging from those who have no fixed, univocal and sovereign identity, of all the half-castes of reason. Around its ecofeminist, transnational and trans-partisan editorial board, it transits between languages and continents, between disciplines and indisciplines, through a generous practice of translation, in search of a renewed political vocabulary.

With its two dossiers (a “Majeure” and a “Mineure”), its “A chaud” of current events, its untimely “Hors champs” and its “Icones” dossier of images inviting an artist to occupy the visual space of the issue, Multitudes goes against the grain of standard politics and culture: repetition, conventionality, and the pretension of transparency. Curious and fond of queer oddities, this quarterly journal practices gold panning in the sands carried by the rivers of the multitudes. It does not claim to substitute itself to any movement, nor to a movement of the movements. It proposes a place from where the alchemy of transformations can be elaborated.
