Breaking with the idealized clichés about solidarity on sports teams being a given, this paper shows that cohesion is the result of adjustment work among team members. Rather than being dictated in an inflexible way, decisions are often subjected to negotiations, mutual evaluations, and collective regulations during the action. Being a team player involves three major elements. The first concerns the transformation of the authority of the coach. Today, he draws his authority from his ability to listen. The second refers to the greater autonomy of the players. Players are less defined by their allegiance to the same team than by a project that makes them interdependent for a limited time. The third change concerns the request for singularity. Players do not want to serve the group unless, in exchange, they can assert their individuality.
