While domestic work in Africa performed by people outside of the family is attracting increasing interest, there is a lack of adequate data to measure its scope and to analyze its characteristics. This article provides a critical inventory of data sources that enable us to understand domestic work situations. Drawing upon the available data, it summarizes and compares the prevalence levels of the phenomenon between countries, but limits its scope to domestic workers who live with their employing household, with a more in-depth comparative analysis between Bamako and Dakar.
