This study aims to document therapeutic factors that exist among gamblers and drug addicts in a center for dependency treatment according to the perceived strength of the group’s cohesion. The study also documents the way in which the therapeutic factors are perceived and expressed within a group of dependent clients. A qualitative analysis was based on interviews with 15 participants according to a score of strong or weak cohesion. Eight therapeutic factors were revealed: universality, hope, and self-understanding were identified in their responses no matter the participants’ level of cohesion. Among the participants with strong adhesion, therapeutic factors such as sharing information, altruism, interpersonal learning, developing social skills, and catharsis were revealed, whereas they were not present among participants with weak cohesion. Therefore, strong cohesion seems to be associated with a greater variety of therapeutic factors. The results of this study reiterate the importance of strong cohesion for the development of therapeutic group factors and, incidentally, its members’ recovery.
