When one considers the fields of “studies” in their diversity, one is also questioning the complex relationships that develop between the disciplinarization of new fields of study and their claimed emancipation or liberation from disciplinary anchors. Tensions and oscillations between apparently contradictory epistemological postures—between discipline and anti-discipline—can be solved by opting for dialogical thinking, which works at the heart of the interdisciplinary process. From this perspective, this contribution discusses the potential and the limitations of “studies” and the relevance of their “proliferation.” It also defines key concepts that aim to identify what is being played out between and beyond disciplines. The article concludes by evoking the epistemological desire that animates any researcher who ventures to the borders of disciplines.
