When Questions de communication offered us a place in the “Exchanges” section to respond to Éric Maigret’s contribution, we did not hesitate, as it was obvious that it would be an interesting topic to discuss. Our comments are in line with a type of critical sociology of knowledge (external criticism), which takes seriously the fact that cultural studies are, at least by inheritance, in the sphere of materialistic and critical thought. On the basis of some of the most salient developments of Éric Maigret’s rich argument, we departed the territory of cultural studies to more broadly discuss the critical context (some other territories) to which they belong and thus to confront them with some radical potentials, including their own, starting with their political position and their relationship with an emancipatory praxis.
