The aim of this study is to review the characteristics of French research published in communication journals. To this end, we examine citations found in articles published from 1992 to 2016 in the top nine French academic journals in this field. We analyze a total of 77,566 citations drawn from 3,195 articles. The results demonstrate that monographs and journal articles constitute the main pathway for knowledge dissemination in communication sciences. They also reveal that the list of the most cited French and foreign journals is significantly different from the one used by the French authorities for information and communication sciences. In addition, we show that citation practices do not vary significantly among the nine journals.
