Amerindian headhunting and cannibalism are attempts to integrate neighbors considered as enemies into a social relationship. Sometimes headhunting also concerns distant groups as for the Wuli in Cameroon who believe in the power of fertility of the reduced heads. Those practices, even violent and cruel, are institutionalized and ritualized, and aim to define or reinforce collective identity. They have nothing to do with modern ethnic genocide according to political objectives.
