During the French revolution enemies are excluded and tracked under numerous designations, but the process concerns all actors of that period and it is the result of a collective political comprehension. The steps leading to that situation and its mutation’ the identification of the enemy with the stranger to the nation-state’ shows how careful we must handle history and how far we are from the classical historiography describing the French revolution as a contingent paroxysm.
