From the 15th to the 17th century, modern Europe created, tracked, and persecuted diabolical heresy. Even if the invention of that number one public enemy remains a mystery, this paper tries to understand how the passion for Union (Christianity, mystical body of the state), of the One, without space for the Other, produced that collective massacre. The devil might be the figure of all the dreams of totality and fusion, the last global construction of Christian language, the symbol of that murderous passion for the Same.
