English
The norms which underlie what teachers do and think result from a compromise between external norms and their beliefs. We study these norms by means of a questionnaire-based survey of 163 primary school teachers. We analyse the responses to open questions through the words used by the teachers, using lexical statistics. The use of the words “élèves” (students) and “temps” (time), which occur very frequently in the responses, reveal several contradictions, which are explained both by the dilemmas inherent in the job and an explosion of benchmarks.
