CAIRN-INT.INFO : International Edition

Although sharing a common base, the statistical scope of the social economy (SE) varies from one country to another. In many countries, the SE remains entirely under the radar of statistical agencies. This reflects the historical and progressive deployment of the SE in different national contexts. Guides have been developed to promote and harmonize statistics for different subsets of the SE at the international level. Recently, one of these guides proposed to cover all of them. However, it excluded many cooperatives and included private for-profit entities. This paper exposes the debate that this situation raises about the vision of the SE conveyed by its statistical representations.
