In many countries, students must pay tuition fees to pursue university studies. Some analyses of changes in access to university and tuition fees have shown that such fees do not affect access, thus legitimating the choice of raising them. In this article, we revisit these analyses, taking some methodological precautions that have often been neglected by similar research. Specifically, we conducted longitudinal and historical analyses for Quebec and Ontario. We find a negative effect of tuition fees on access to university. This negative effect is stronger for those whose parents are less educated, for Francophones in both provinces, and for older students.
