The scientific domain formed by nanosciences and nanotechnology has considerably spread out since a couple of years. This article tackles it through workspace study, drawing on a series of interviews and observations conducted in some French physics labs. Following researchers in theirs labs, it shows how “bricolage” is locally highlighted as one of the main features of the work culture they claim to favor. This culture clearly binds tinkering practices to a “distributed” organizational model, and the author analyzes the meaning of those physicists’ preferences in relation to the hopes and fears they express about their professional environment’s recent transformations, in the French “innovation policy” frame.
